Whether this is your first pregnancy or you’ve been there before, reflexology can give you a real boost. It can help your body rebalance itself, as it changes rapidly through pregnancy. It can also help you to overcome many common pregnancy related ailments as well as providing valuable assistance for birth and post natal recovery.
Throughout your pregnancy I use a comfortable reclining chair, so you don’t have to lie flat on your back and is extremely therapeutic and safe. It can take heavier weight and is great for getting your feet up.
Generally, it is advisable to start reflexology prior to pregnancy or from the second trimester (13 weeks). During this time it can be used to help you with general relaxation and assist with the relief of pregnancy related issues such as
- backache
- constipation
- heartburn
- insomnia
- mood changes
- morning sickness
- oedema
From 37 weeks reflexology treatments begin to focus on helping the body prepare for birth. At 40 weeks, specialist reflexology techniques can be introduced to support the natural induction of labour.
induction of labour
Once your pregnancy is ‘full term’ priming methods are introduced to your treatment. These therapeutic techniques are used to promote and support you and your baby as you both prepare for birth. It involves strong stimulation of specific reflex areas to encourage a boost of energy and the onset of labour.
Of course there are no guarantees, as with any other medical intervention or therapy, but case studies have shown reflexology to be effective in helping the onset of labour and even to reduce time taken in labour.
It is recommended that between one to three treatments are undertaken to benefit from the cumulative effect of reflexology. The minimum time between session is 24 hours.
